AIS Connect packs a punch

Industrial training specialist, AIS Connect is introducing boxing and fitness lessons into its traineeship programmes to teach young people invaluable skills for the workplace including self-discipline and respect for others.

AIS Connect has enlisted the help of former Commonwealth Games medallist and undefeated professional boxer, Andy McLean and inspirational fitness coach Sharon Moore to deliver a six-week programme of boxing and fitness training for youngsters aged 16-24 on its traineeship courses.

The initiative aims to help trainees become fit and healthy, as well as instilling values such as discipline, respect and self-motivation. Lasting for one hour per week, the sessions are proving popular with many of the trainees choosing to attend extra evening stints at Generation Fitness gym in North Shields.

Employability tutor at AIS Connect, Michael McNally said: “Numerous studies have shown how important it is for companies to have a fit and healthy workforce as it results in less absence through sickness and leads to higher productivity and a happier workplace.

“Making sure our AIS Connect trainees appreciate the importance of taking regular exercise is another key employability skill we give them.  I regularly start sessions at AIS Connect with warm-ups and exercise to promote energy and help trainees develop a healthy lifestyle. Exercise is widely known as a learning enhancer as it promotes the release of endorphins, serotonin and dopamine. It also helps focus and increases energy levels. By linking up with professional trainers, Andy McLean and Sharon Moore, we are taking this approach up a gear and ensuring our trainees embed health and fitness into their everyday lives.”

AIS trainee, Anthony Baker said: “It’s fantastic that AIS Connect is providing this opportunity to experience the sport of boxing. It is not what most people expect it to be. It is about discipline, intelligence and it encourages you to respect others. As well as pushing you to the limits, it’s great for your confidence as the positive feedback makes you feel good about yourself.”
